The Twenty-third Dynasty

Chaos and chaos increased during the rule of the kings of the Twenty-Second Dynasty, especially during the rule of Kings Sheshenq III, Bami, and Sheshenq IV. Division began to prevail in Egypt more and more, especially in the Delta. Thus, the Twenty-Third Dynasty arose before the Twenty-Second Dynasty ended. Therefore, we find that the two dynasties were contemporaneous for a period, especially during the days of Shashenq III, whose rule lasted for about thirty-nine years, and also “Bami”, who lasted for about Seven years.

Maneton gave the Twenty-Third Dynasty the names of four kings, headed by ‘Badi Bast’, and from examining some of the names and titles held by the kings of the Twenty-Third Dynasty, such as Badi Bast, Shasheng V, Osirakon III, and Takilut III, we find that this dynasty was linked to the dynasty

It was during this period that the importance of Bubast as the capital of New Egypt was recognised, as the Shishang family had settled there for some time before the 22nd Dynasty took power.

The division of the country into two parts to the south and north resulted in the existence of another branch in the eastern Delta. In addition to these two contemporary dynasties that shared power, small local dynasties appear to have emerged in the northwest of the Delta, and although all these small kings never showed hostility to each other, this fragmentation of power had serious consequences for Egypt, which found itself in a state of disintegration and collapse, difficult in such circumstances to raise a strong army to defend the country, and unable to implement the general economic projects necessary for the country's prosperity.

The 23rd dynasty's most noteworthy sovereign:

  • Liby: This dynasty’s notable king, Liby, has united some parts of Egypt under himself. However, he couldn’t keep the whole nation together for a long time.
  • Sheshenk I: Among all the famous kings from this dynasty is Sheshenk I who invaded Kingdom of Judah and seized several treasures as mentioned in the Bible.
